چکیده

The effects of prostaglandin F2\g=a\on peripheral plasma progesterone and oestrogen levels, incidence of oestrous cycle alteration, and fertility were examined in thirty beef heifers. The PGF2\g=a\was administered by insertion of an insemination pipette into the lumen of the uterus during three periods of the oestrous cycle: Days 3 to 5, Days 9 and 10, and Days 16 and 17. Oestrus occurred within 2 to 5 days in all animals treated except those treated on Days 3 and 4. Plasma progesterone levels had fallen significantly by the day following treatment and continued to fall in those heifers returning to oestrus. As progesterone fell, plasma oestrogen increased to a peak level on the day before or the day of oestrus. The hormone patterns were quite similar to those of the untreated animals as they approached oestrus and during the 16-day period after mating. The pregnancy rate was significantly lower in the treated heifers than in the untreated heifers. This was probably due to uterine infections rather than to the drug per se.

Effect of time of eCG administration on the fate of ovarian follicle in Holstein heifers

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) on ovarian follicles at three stages of development (emergence, dominance and early static phases) during the first follicular wave (FFW) in Holstein heifers. Heifers (n=20) were randomly assigned into four experimental groups (n=5 in each group). Heifers received eCG (500 IU; Folligon®; Intervet, H...

Investigating optimal bull:heifer ratios required for estrus-synchronized heifers.

The objectives of this study were to determine 1) the effect of bull:heifer ratio on reproductive performance and associated costs and return on heifers in synchronized estrus and 2) the effect of estrus synchronization on reproductive performance and economic variables, in a multiple-sire, pasture breeding situation. Eight hundred yearling beef heifers and 28 mature, sexually experienced beef ...

Effect of termination of pregnancy or long-term progestogen exposure on subsequent estrous cycle length and concentration of progesterone in plasma of heifers.

An experiment was conducted to determine whether short estrous cycles following abortion of heifers between 70 and 75 d of gestation are due to factors associated with the previous presence of a conceptus or long-term exposure of the uterus and(or) ovaries to a progestogen. Fifty crossbred heifers were randomly allotted at estrus (d 0) to five groups: control (n = 10), pregnant (Preg.; n = 14),...

Ovulatory response of different GnRH analogues and subsequent corpus luteum lifespan in the presence of norgestomet in Holstein heifers

This study investigated the effect of GnRH analogues on inducing ovulation of dominant follicle (DF)and subsequent corpus luteum (CL) lifespan in the presence of norgestomet implant in Holstein heifers. Onday 6 to 8 of the estrous cycle (day 0 of the experiment), all heifers (n=15) received norgestomet implantfollowed by prostaglandin injection on days 0 and 1. On day 4, group 1 (n=4) and 2 (n=...

Effect of oxytocin administration on the oestrous cycle of unilaterally hysterectomized heifers.

The effect of oxytocin administration on the oestrous cycle was studied in sixteen uterine-intact and thirty-two surgically prepared unicornual heifers. Unilateral hysterectomy was performed on Day 3 of the oestrous cycle and oxytocin or an equivalent volume of physiological saline was administered daily from Day 3 to Day 7 or 8. Oxytocin produced significantly shorter oestrous cycles in the in...
